An initiative taken the state of Tamil Nadu is an appreciative and first step in controlling the harassment against LGBTQIA+ community. These new Rules could be instrumental in bringing a change in the treatment of authorities towards these sections. These Rules could act as deterrent towards the authorities.
The state of Tamil Nadu brought amendment in the ‘Tamil Nadu Subordinate Police Officers Conduct Rules’ with an aim of safeguarding the rights of LGBTQIA+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Asexual) community.
The Amended Rules has inserted a provision that directs the State Police officers not to indulge in harassing the people belonging to or representing the LGBTQIA community. The new insertion of Rule 24C states, “No police officer shall indulge in any act of harassment of any person belonging to the LGBTQIA+ Community and the persons working for the welfare of the said community.”
However, the notification clearly states that the term ‘harassment’ does not mean that the police officials cannot hold enquires whilst following the due process of law.
